Raising Funds to Help the Youth 

At The Freddie Solomon Foundation of Sumter, South Carolina our goal is to raise funds to help the youth living in Sumter, SC and the entire state of South Carolina. Our endeavor is to build a Freddie Solomon Boys and Girls Youth Center to serve at-risk children in the community.

A Little about Freddie Solomon  

A native of Sumter, South Carolina, Freddie Solomon was born on January 11, 1953. A High School standout from Sumter High School, Freddie was named the states No. 1 high school athlete of the 20th century by the State Newspaper. In his senior season, Freddie led the Sumter Gamecocks to an 11 and 3 season. In the Shrine Bowl at Charlotte’s Memorial Stadium, Solomon had what is considered to be one of the greatest performance in the game’s history. Solomon set a record for rushing yards with 197 yards. He also scored three touchdowns. Solomon was named the top athlete from Sumter County in the 20th century by The Item.

Freddie is a member of the Sumter High School Athletic Hall of Fame, the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Hall of Fame. Freddie started collegiately at the University of Tampa, where he played quarterback. He finished his four year career completing 188 passes of 436 attempts for 2,504 yards and 11 touchdowns. He added 3,299 rushing yards and 39 touchdowns on 557 carries. Solomon also posted 17, 100-yards rushing games.

In 2002 he was named one of the University of Tampa’s “Athlete of the Century.” Freddie was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 2nd round of the 1975 NFL draft. Solomon was acquired by the San Francisco 49ers in 1978 through a trade. Solomon continued a successful eight year career in San Francisco winning two Super Bowl titles in 1981 and 1984.During his eight year career in San Francisco, Solomon made 310 receptions for 4,873 yards and 43 touchdowns while rushing for 329 yards and 3 touchdowns. In 1980 Solomon became the first player in franchise history to return two punts for scores in a single-season. Solomon holds the franchise record for best receiving average in a single season with 21.4 yards per reception in 1983.

An 11-year NFL veteran, Solomon retired from the game after the 1985 season and finished his career with 371 receptions for 5,846 yards and 48 touchdowns. Upon retiring from football, Solomon lived a life of service to the community. He worked for over two decades in community relations with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, mentoring youth and teaching vital life lessons through football fundamentals.

Each winter Freddie and his wife Delilah organizes a special Christmas celebration for children from a local community agency with support from community partners such as his friend (and former 49ers team owner), Eddie DeBartolo, Jr. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office honored Solomon by renaming a main building at the Sheriff’s Office complex the Freddie
